Posted October 3, 2026

Job Description

Applications are open for the ARSO 14th Continental Essay Competition 2026/2027, a continental writing competition for university and college students who want to examine practical ways of strengthening African trade and industrial development.

The competition focuses on the relationship between standards, conformity assessment, mutual recognition and the cotton-to-clothing value chain under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

About the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO)

The African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) is a continental standards body established in 1977. It works to harmonise African standards, conformity assessment procedures and related systems across the continent.

ARSO’s work is aimed at reducing technical barriers to trade, supporting intra-African and international trade, and contributing to Africa’s industrialisation. The organisation coordinates standards-related initiatives involving African countries and their national standards institutions.

About the ARSO 14th Continental Essay Competition 2026/2027

The competition gives students an opportunity to research and present ideas on how African countries can use standards and trade cooperation to improve the movement of goods across borders. Entries must address the official theme:

“Advancing Intra-African Trade through Conformity Assessment and Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) — Unlocking the Full Potential of the Cotton-to-Clothing Value Chain under the AfCFTA”.

Participants compete first through the relevant structures in their countries. National winners are announced through participating country institutions and national standards bodies, while continental winners are scheduled to be announced in July 2027.

Competition Details

  • Competition year: 2026/2027

  • Format: Written essay submission

  • Eligible region: Participating African continental member states

  • Languages: English or French

  • Essay length: 1,000 to 1,200 words, excluding references and author details

  • Application opening date: 2026-09-03

  • Deadline for country submissions to ARSO: 2027-04-23

  • Continental winner announcement: July 2027

Essay Participant

Each participant must develop one original essay that directly responds to the competition theme. The essay should analyse how conformity assessment and Mutual Recognition Agreements can support intra-African trade and strengthen different stages of the cotton-to-clothing value chain within the AfCFTA framework.

Applicants are responsible for meeting the word count, formatting, language, originality and documentation requirements. Only one essay may be submitted by each applicant.

Eligibility & Requirements

  • Applicants must be under 35 years of age.

  • Applicants must be citizens or residents of a participating African continental member state.

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.

  • The programme must be offered by a recognised university, college or other recognised tertiary institution.

  • The essay must address the official 2026/2027 competition theme.

  • The essay must be between 1,000 and 1,200 words, excluding references and author details.

  • The document must be double-spaced.

  • The essay must be prepared in Century Gothic, size 12.

  • Entries may be written in English or French.

  • The essay must be original and unpublished.

  • Plagiarised or AI-generated essays are disqualified.

  • Applicants may submit only one essay.

  • The first page must include the author’s title, full name, study programme and year, university or college, town and country, and contact details.

  • Applicants must attach a copy of an identity card or passport.

  • Applicants must attach a completed ARSO registration form.

Suggested Areas for Analysis

The theme requires applicants to connect trade facilitation with standards and the production of cotton-based clothing. A strong submission should remain focused on the stated theme and explain how the relevant systems can address barriers affecting producers, manufacturers, exporters and consumers across African markets.

Applicants may examine the role of conformity assessment in demonstrating that products meet agreed standards, as well as how Mutual Recognition Agreements can help participating countries accept assessment results conducted in another country. The essay should also relate these issues to the AfCFTA and the development of a more integrated cotton-to-clothing value chain.

Submission and Selection

Entries are handled through the relevant National Standards Body or coordinating institution in the applicant’s country. Applicants must use the submission channel applicable to their country rather than sending an essay directly through a general continental process.

Participating national institutions and standards bodies manage the national stage and announce national winners. National entries are then submitted to ARSO for consideration at the continental level. The competition recognises winners at both national and continental levels.

Prizes and Recognition

National winners receive award certificates and national-level prizes administered by the participating national bodies.

At the continental level, the prizes are:

  • First place: USD 1,000, a Certificate of Excellence and travel sponsorship to the 33rd ARSO General Assembly.

  • Second place: USD 800 and a Certificate of Excellence.

  • Third place: USD 500 and a Certificate of Excellence.

Submission Information

Applicants should submit their essays, identification document and completed registration form through the relevant National Standards Body or coordinating institution in their country. Country-specific submission channels apply, so applicants should confirm the process with the appropriate national body before the national submission deadline.

The continental deadline for participating countries to submit entries to ARSO is 23rd April, 2027. The general ARSO contact email for enquiries is info@arso-oran.org.
