The European Union LASOMA Scholarship offers fully funded Master’s and PhD opportunities covering tuition fees, health insurance, research workshops, travel support, and an annual living stipend of up to €14,760.

European Union LASOMA Scholarship Details

The LASOMA Scholarship (Lasers for Net-Zero Solar Systems Manufacture) is an Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme funded by the European Union in collaboration with the African Union.

LASOMA is a flagship African scholarship and research initiative focused on building capacity for sustainable solar systems manufacturing through advanced laser-based manufacturing technologies integrated with Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, and Big Data Science.

The programme is delivered through a partnership involving six institutions across four countries and offers fully funded opportunities for a 2-year Master’s degree or a 3-year PhD programme.

The initiative is designed to develop highly skilled African researchers and professionals capable of driving innovation in renewable energy, climate technology, and sustainable manufacturing.

Eligibility Requirements for LASOMA Master’s and PhD Scholarships 2026

To qualify for the LASOMA Scholarships, applicants must:

  • Be a national and resident of an African country at the time of application
  • Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant Engineering discipline
  • Demonstrate strong academic and research potential
  • Meet the academic and language requirements of the host institution
  • Not have previously benefited from any Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme (2022–2027) scholarship project
  • Have research interests aligned with LASOMA focus areas such as:
    • Laser manufacturing
    • Solar systems technology
    • Climate change solutions
    • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applications

The programme strongly encourages applications from underrepresented groups, with targets including:

  • 30% female participation
  • 10% participation from persons with special needs

    • €1,230 monthly for PhD students
