Job Description
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has opened the 2026 National Research Fund (NRF) Grant Cycle, inviting eligible researchers and lecturers in Nigerian public tertiary institutions to submit research proposals addressing key national development priorities.
The 2026 funding cycle provides an opportunity for researchers to secure support for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research across areas such as agriculture, health, energy, technology, education, economic development, governance, environment, and other priority sectors.
According to the 2026 call, the National Research Fund has a funding pool of up to ₦10 billion. Researchers are required to begin with a Concept Note, while successful applicants will subsequently be invited to develop and submit full research proposals.
What Is the TETFund National Research Fund?
The National Research Fund (NRF) is one of TETFund’s research intervention programmes established to strengthen research capacity and support research projects that address important national challenges.
The programme is open to researchers in public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria and encourages collaboration across different disciplines and sectors.
The Fund covers three broad research categories:

Who Can Apply?
The National Research Fund is primarily targeted at lecturers and researchers in Nigerian public tertiary institutions.
Eligible institutions include:
- Public universities
- Public polytechnics
- Public colleges of education
The Principal Investigator (PI) must be institution-based, and the PI’s institution will serve as the coordinating institution for the research project.
TETFund preferably requires the PI in a university to be of professorial cadre, while the PI in a polytechnic or college of education should preferably be a chief lecturer.
Other qualified researchers may also participate as members of the research team. TETFund allows additional researchers to be drawn from private tertiary institutions, research institutes, Centres of Excellence, and industry, where relevant to the proposed research.
This makes it possible for research teams to combine expertise from different institutions and sectors.
What Type of Research Is Encouraged?
TETFund encourages multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research projects, particularly research capable of addressing significant national development challenges.
A strong research proposal should clearly demonstrate:
- The specific problem being addressed
- Research objectives
- Relevance of the research to Nigeria’s development
- Proposed methodology
- Expected research outcomes
- Expertise available within the research team
- Potential contribution of the research findings to solving identified challenges
How Does the Application Process Work?
The NRF application process begins with the submission of a Concept Note.
Researchers submit their Concept Notes through the National Research Fund online platform, where they are evaluated by the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee (NRFS&MC).
Principal Investigators whose Concept Notes are successful will subsequently be invited to develop and submit full research proposals.
Applicants registering on the platform may be required to provide information such as:
