Role Summary
As a Linux Support Engineer at Canonical, you’ll be responsible for delivering world-class technical support across Canonical’s Desktop and Server technology stack.
From problem qualification to full resolution, you’ll own and manage customer cases while collaborating closely with colleagues and senior engineers to ensure timely and effective solutions.
You’ll act as a trusted advisor and problem solver—balancing customer needs, technical accuracy, and service excellence.
The role also includes continuous learning and participation in training, team meetings, and company events to keep you up to date with the latest innovations in open-source technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate and troubleshoot complex issues reported by customers.
- Resolve technical problems related to Canonical’s portfolio of products, ensuring adherence to Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Communicate effectively with customers through tickets, calls, and remote sessions to deliver timely resolutions.
- Collaborate across teams and escalate cases when necessary for deeper investigation.
- Contribute to and maintain knowledge base articles, ensuring continuous improvement in customer support documentation.
- Understand and communicate Ubuntu’s development processes to manage customer expectations effectively.
- Participate in a rotational weekend schedule for global support coverage.
What We’re Looking For
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
- A strong academic record, ideally with a degree in a technical field (or an equivalent, demonstrable technical background).
- Proven experience with Linux troubleshooting — including log collection, configuration management, and issue resolution.
- Familiarity with Linux system integration (authentication, directory services, network file systems, etc.).
- Ability to interpret stack traces and logs to determine next steps or escalate appropriately.
- Solid understanding of operating systems, application-level bugs, and debugging processes.
- Programming fundamentals in at least one language.
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, adapt to change, and thrive under pressure.
- Commitment to customer success through empathy, professionalism, and clear communication.
- Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for team or company events (up to two weeks).
