Job Description of the Trainee Accountant at Genesis Group Nigeria

A Trainee Accountant is an entry-level role assisting senior staff with daily bookkeeping, financial reporting, and reconciliations while studying for a professional certification (ACCA, CIMA, ACA, or AAT).

Key responsibilities include processing journal entries, conducting bank reconciliations, assisting with VAT returns, and supporting month-end closing procedures.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Bookkeeping & Transactions: Inputting daily invoices, expenses, and cash book transactions into accounting software (e.g., Xero, Sage, QuickBooks).
  • Reconciliations: Reconciling bank statements with internal records and managing aged debtors/creditors.
  • Month-End Support: Assisting with management accounts, VAT returns, and preparing journal adjustments.
  • Audit Preparation: Assisting with year-end audit preparations, including file maintenance and documenting transactions.
  • Compliance: Ensuring compliance with financial regulations and company policies.
  • Administrative Tasks: Handling filing, maintaining the fixed asset register, and responding to client queries

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Education: A degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Certification Pursuit: Actively studying for or committed to studying for a professional accountancy qualification (AAT, ACA, ACCA).
  • Software Proficiency: Experience with Microsoft Excel and basic knowledge of accounting software.
  • Technical Skills: Strong numeracy, attention to detail, and analytical skills.
  • Soft Skills: Strong time management, organizational skills, and a willingness to learn.
